Amanda’s Story

Hi, I am Amanda Hoffmann the BAS Agent of My Office Books.

My journey did not start out as you might expect. I come from a very modest housing commission suburb on the South of Brisbane called Logan City.
I grew up in a very traditional single income family where Dad worked full-time as a drainer then hospital orderly, while my mum was a full-time house wife. We went on one family holiday to Harvey Bay and that was the only holiday they were ever able to afford.

Growing up in Woodridge in the late 80’s/ early 90’s was not warm and fluffy.
Drugs were sold in my school, knife fights and prostitution occurred regularly in the street I lived in.
Many of the girls I grew up with at high school had one career choice, give birth to 5 babies by age 21, so that they could live off social security.

Owning and running a business was not on my radar until I was a new wife.
My husband had spent $40,000 establishing a new Pest Control / Carpet Cleaning business for a friend.
Unfortunately, after a difficult divorce, his friend had a emotional / mental breakdown and walked away from the business.
Being a new wife who wanted to please her husband, I became one of the first female licensed pest controllers in Australia and thus caught the entrepreneurial bug!

I sold the business before starting my family of four children, researching and buying real estate for our retirement in the future.
In 2008 I started my own Bookkeeping business part-time to help out with the family budget and growing property portfolio.

After the deaths of both of my husband’s parents in 2015, I reflected on my business and family goals.
My new focus since mid 2016, is to help tradespeople and real estate investors meet their tax compliance while educating them on how to achieve their business goals.

I accomplish this through bookkeeping in the traditional sense, business coaching, blogging, recording podcasts and in the future holding workshops.

Amanda’s Guiding Principles

I have a few guiding principles that keep me focused and grounded on the right things in life.
In the online business world, it’s just as easy to lose your path, as it is to find it.

These principles keep me on course.

1. Mistakes and failures are your friends

We often are so fearful of failure, that we do not make the effort to even try. My greatest success has come from failure and making mistakes. Respect that when bad things do occur, they are a learning experience where you vow to never, ever repeat them. When awesome things occur, then embrace them, respect them, learn our to stimulate more positive experiences and let them happen.

2. Make your own success and happiness.

After loosing the people I love and whose wisdom still echos in my memory, I have learnt that happiness is a skill you can learn. Success is what makes you happy and not what others might think. If you can look at your reflection each morning and smile at yourself, then you are on the right path. Cherish those around you, never take them for granted and know yourself.

3. Follow your heart, not your head

After years of following my head for figures, investments, life choices, I was miserable. If you follow your heart, what makes you sing inside and find a match in your career, then the money will simply follow. Life was meant for living, so LIVE IT!
